1. Upavan:
UPAVAN is a project devised for income generation for tribal as well as small farmers through propagation of medicinal plants and their usage

The main objective of UPAVAN is to create an income generation program for tribal as well as small farmers through cultivation of medicinal plants. Propagation of herbal medicines is planned as well so that the local population is not solely dependant on the Government Health Services - which are scarce in small and tribal villages. This way, we are promoting usage of herbal medicines. In course of time we wish to establish herbal gardens in small villages as well as Taluka places, so that people return to our own herbal cure - popularly known as Aaji Cha Batwa (meaning grand mother's herbal first aid pack) for minor ailments, side by side, we will be disseminating scientific information to all the local population of these time tested herbal formulations. This will interest them in incresed usage of herbs' medicines and will reduce dependence on allopathic medicines which are not only expensive but also have adverse side effects. These are time tested and this corresponds with the statement in Charak Samhita that the flora of a particular area is generally found effective in the treatment of common illnesses found there.

We have been working on this project for the last couple of years having UPAVAN registered in 1999. We have a demonstration nursery on Bhandara Road.

After surveying Melghat area, we have secured hundreds of species : seeds and plants for our demo nursery which is frequently visited by small farmers from nearby villeges. Looking at their interest , we have started enrolling them as our members. The membership benefits are : we provide them seeds and planting material, the members nurse them and when the plants are ripe for use, we make buy back agreement. Through our network we supply them to the Pharmaceutical Companies and Ayurvedic practitioners.

We wish to spread this project to the tribal area.

To give shape to this program, we need assistance in the form of propagators . If you wish to know more on this project and be associated with this unique kind of work kindly get in touch with us, we shall be glad to give more details.

2. Matkajhari:
Our Self Help Group at Matkazhari village is the main link between grassroot activities and shri shail. The group began its work in 2002 under leadership of Mr. Dhengre. This group consists of 10 members who work exclusively for us throughout the year.

During slack season when other daily wage earners prefer migrating towards cities these members earn money in the villages. One more self help group has joined from Ramtek taluka during last year and is happy to get associated with us

Thus, we can confidently say that income at village level can be assured if the farmers are engaged in collection and cultivation of medicinal herbs.
